Ekta Grande XT25 upgrade

This is pair of EGs I have build as my first DIY speakers. Soon after I started to learn speaker measurements and design, so EGs went to new owner. Coincidentally after a years they got back to me for an upgrade.

Let's start with the original horizontal responses 0-90degrees in 10degrees steps. Not bad at all, I do not see any obviuos problem here. No significant diffractions thank to the shape of front baffle (I remember doing these baffles only with planer and sand paper), no excessive energy, all that I expected. Yet the sound was not good at all, to overblown, no bass texture, very low impact, and treble seemed hidden. I was curious if I am able to improve it.

New crossover design with Satori TW29DN

This upgrade took me significant effort to finish. The first upgrade attempt was done with common mic position method as Vituix v2 was not yet available. I was able to achieve improvement, but I started to anticipate the real limitations of common mic position method. After learning Vituix v2 method I clearly saw what was wrong with the original crossover.

When I connected new crossover, I just had to increase the value of woofer inductor, adjust the amount of damping material and finished. This is the sound and result I can be proud of.

Individual driver measurements for crossover design

Mic distance 1m, gatting 4-5ms. No smoothing.

Crossover modelling

Below is the situation for listening distance 3000mm.

Thank to tilted baffle and good linear drivers the phase tracking graph is something I do not see often. It is best reward at the end for the designer to see good correlation between the graphs and great sound.

Crossover is typical all LR2 filters. Tweeter RLC tames the bump between 10-20kHz. Final version has 4R7 resistor in tweeter crossover.

All drivers measured at their own elevation, the method introduced in Vituix v2. I cannot appreciate that method enough, and it helped me to make already several projects with great sound.
