This project is on customer's request and has two goals. Customer originaly built Troelse's TJL3W and after years, just out of curiosity and also enthusiasm for DIY, we have come to upgrade. The first goal is to create more appealing cabinets (original ones can be seen bellow), and the second to find suitable tweeter for W12.

Seas DXT was obvious choice, offering some WG loading => good directivity matching with W12, ability to cross ~2kHz and dome material matching to W12/W18.

W12 has rising HD3 above 2kHz and HD5 peak right at 2kHz. LR4 crossover at ~2kHz should allow to get the best performance from W12.

Measurements and crossover modelling in original cabinets

The first step of upgrade was to evaluate drivers in original cabinets and to model crossover to see the resulting responses and needed crossover complexity.

Measured horizontal responses of individual drivers are following (all measured from design axis, mic distance 1m from baffle).

DXT H 0-90:

Very nice responses from DXT showing low directivity and low diffractions.

W12 H 0-90:

Crossover modelling will show if LR4 ~2kHz brings good breakup (7kHz, 10kHz,...) suppresion.

W18 H 0-90:

This should be easy to work with, crossover modelling will show if planned LR2 ~500Hz + series R-C in parallel to mains woofer inductor brings sufficient suppresion of breakup at 4-5kHz.

Crossover modelling

LR2 at 500Hz between woofer and mid and LR4 between mid and tweeter seems feasible. Overall,  horizontal responses are nice with low dispersion, good phase matching between drivers, easy impedance for amplifier and linear power response. This looks promising and new cabinets can be made.
